Listen to the Friday Speech in English here: Trusting God and Warning Against Fortune Tellers

Praise be to God. We praise Him. We seek help, guidance, and forgiveness from Him. We thank Him. We seek refuge in God from the evils of our souls and from our bad deeds. He whom God guides, no one misguides; and he whom God misguides no one guides. I bear witness that no one is God except Allah, without partners, and I bear witness that our Master Muhammad is His slave, Messenger, chosen, and beloved one. We supplicate God to raise the rank of our Master Muhammad, a supplication by which our needs would be fulfilled, our troubles would be relieved, and we would be warded against the evil of our enemies; and we supplicate for his safety and that of his family and companions.

Slaves of God, I advise you and myself to fear God, the Most High, the Almighty God Who revealed (at-Taghabun 13)

that means: “Allah - no one is God except Him. And in Allah let the believers trust.”

Brothers of faith, an obligation of the heart is trusting God, that is relying on Him, the Almighty. The slave must depend on God because He is the Creator of everything, the benefits, harms, and everything that enters into existence. No one is truly the Creator of harm or benefit except Allah. If the slave believes that and settles his heart on it, his dependence will be on Allah in matters of livelihood and safety from harm.

Trusting God is the heart confidence in God. Al-Junayd Al-Baghdadiyy, may God accept his deeds, said: “Trusting (God) is leaving out true dependence on someone other than God.”

So, whoever trusts in God avoids resorting to what God has forbidden, such as working with magic and going to fortune tellers and identifiers.

Fortune tellers are people who deal with telling about what will happen in the future, like those who have friends from the Jinn who bring news to them. So, they rely on Jinn news to tell people that so and so will happen.

Identifiers are people who deal with identifying locations of stolen and lost items and the like.

Our beloved Muhammad said: “Whoever goes to a fortune teller or an identifier and believes him in what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad.” (al-Hakim).

The one who goes to a fortune teller or an identifier, and believes he knows the (entire) unseen has disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, because no one knows the (entire) unseen except Allah. The Almighty revealed (an-Naml 65)

that means: “Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the (entire) unseen except Allah..."”

This hadith does not include someone who thinks that the fortune teller or identifier may or may not tell the truth. This person does not disbelieve, rather he is disobedient by asking them.

Some jinn sometimes eavesdrop on the angels who are entrusted with sending the rain while in the clouds. The jinn ascend to a place close to these clouds. The angels talk among themselves about what will happen this year in the land of such-and-such, and such-and-such incidents will occur, such as the death of a person, the birth of a newborn, or a person taking over or removed from leadership, and other matters that God has informed the angels about, because God informs the angels, prophets, and righteous of part of the unseen; He does not inform them of the whole unseen.

After these jinn have eavesdropped on the angels, they descend to Earth and tell their human companions.

Thus, beware of those who claim to summon souls, while in reality it is summoning Jinn, for the souls of the pious do not like to return to this world even if they own the world and what is in it, and the souls of the unbelievers are under the angels of torment. Those imposters cannot take them from the angels of torment. Rather, the attendants of such sessions are the jinn (not the souls) who knew the condition of this person and lived with him, either his jinn associate or someone else who knew his conditions, lie and say: I am the soul of so-and-so. We ask refuge in God from such evil.

Not included in the aforementioned the one who repeats a verse a specific number of times for a good purpose, because such a session may be attended by the angels of mercy due to the blessing of this verse. As for those whose purpose is the world, their session is not attended by the angels of mercy.

Most of those who say about themselves that they are spiritual work with the jinn. However, they do not tell people that they work with the jinn because if they say this to people then people do not believe them. However, if they say they were spiritual, people go to them. In the beginning the jinn show that they are observing the Shari^ah; then they introduce things that are against the Shari^ah.

Our shaykh Shaykh ^Abdullah al-Harariyy, may God accept his deeds, spoke of a man in their area who said: I am spiritual, meaning angels are with me. People seek him for a sick person or something else. He comes after sunset, then people come to him. Then after a while he turns off the light. People feel movements. The jinn salute the audience without identifying themselves as jinn. They say they are spiritual. They speak and say: This patient’s illness is so and so, and his medicine is so and so.

In one session, the jinn said: Some people mistrust us and say we are jinn; we are not jinn. We are the angels without a father or a mother. Then God exposed them when one of them said: I order my son Maymun to do so and so.

The Almighty exposed him, because it is known that the angels do not have sexual intercourse; they are neither male nor female; but they are bodies created from light. They do not eat, drink, or copulate; they do not disobey God’s command and they do as they are commanded.

I ask God for forgiveness for you and me.

Brothers of faith, Shaykh ^Abdul-Wahhab ash-Sha^raniyy, may God accept his deeds, said in his book (Lata’iful-Minani wal-‘Akhlaq), quoting Ibn ^Arabiyy, that he said: “The one who wants not to stray does not throw the scale of the Shar^iah from his hand even for an eyewink, but rather he brings it along with him day and night at every saying, act, and belief.”

My praying brother, the more you attend the circles of religious knowledge that we give, the scale of Shar^iah strengthens for you. Hence, whoever has learned the religion of God will distinguish between beautiful and ugly, good and evil, lawful and unlawful, and belief and disbelief.
